Introduction

Karlsplatz is a historic square in the center of Munich, Germany. It was built in 1797 and named after the Bavarian elector Karl Theodor. The square used to have a tavern called "Beim Stachus", which is no longer there, but the nickname Stachus is still used today. The most important buildings on the square are the remains of the medieval castle gates, which have been demolished, and the neobaroque Justice Palace. In the summer, there is a large fountain in front of Karlsplatz, which turns into an open-air ice rink in winter. There is also a large shopping center underground, surrounded by numerous shops and restaurants in Munich's main pedestrian area. Karlsplatz has two underground stations for the subway and suburban trains, and it is also an important hub for the Altstadtring tram system, which circles the old city.
