Introduction

The Brussels Palace of Justice is an important courthouse building in Belgium and an iconic landmark of the city of Brussels. This neoclassical-style building, combining modern and classical elements, was designed and constructed by architect Joseph Poelaert from 1866 to 1883. The construction costs reached 45 million Belgian francs, making it one of the most ambitious building projects of the 19th century. During World War II, retreating German forces set fire to parts of the building, and the dome was severely damaged. Restoration and reconstruction work was not completed until 1947.
