Introduction

Boyana Church is a historic church located in the suburbs of Sofia. It consists of two parts, with the oldest being the East Church, which was built in the early 11th century. The first layer of frescoes inside the East Church are estimated to date back to the 11th to 12th century and are now considered very valuable. The second part of the church was built in the mid-13th century and is connected to the East Church. Based on donor inscriptions on the north wall, the second layer of frescoes dates back to 1259 and was created by a group of artists known as the Boyana Master on top of the earlier frescoes. These artists showed excellent achievements in the medieval Bulgarian culture through advanced painting techniques. The last part of the church was built in the mid-19th century and was donated by local groups. In 2008, Boyana Church was reopened after a long period of restoration, with a new temperature and humidity control system to better protect the frescoes. In 1979, Boyana Church was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
