Introduction

The Summer Palace was built by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1849, and on August 19, 1853, he and Princess Sisi held their engagement ceremony at the Summer Palace. Afterwards, the Emperor's mother, Sophie, gave him the villa as a wedding gift, and it became the royal summer residence.
