Introduction

The Bone House is located next to a church on the slopes of Hallstatt and is one of the town's most important churches. Over 60% of the population in Hallstatt are Catholics, and the cemetery also accommodates people of Protestant and other faiths. Due to limited space in the small town cemetery and the custom of making room for future generations, the skulls of ancestors are placed in a corner of the church for study and remembrance. In a solemn atmosphere, around 600 skulls of various styles are stacked together, with names, birth dates, and death dates beautifully engraved in elegant fonts, as well as patterns such as crosses and roses. This Bone House is a unique historical heritage of Hallstatt, demonstrating the significance and sincerity of life.
