Introduction
The underground crypt of this church is the final resting place of one of Europe's most prestigious royal families, the Habsburgs, with 143 members including 12 emperors, 18 empresses, and 113 other family members. From the 15th to the 18th century, the Habsburgs ruled over much of Europe until the outbreak of World War I. The funerals and preservation of the bodies of royal members were highly regarded, with bodies being stored in different sacred tombs, placed in metal coffins, hearts preserved in silver urns, and other organs stored in sacred vessels. There are a total of 104 metal coffins and 5 containers holding hearts, each showcasing various styles ranging from plain Protestantism to lavish Rococo. Among the 105 coffins in the crypt, the most magnificent belong to Maria Theresa and her husband, Francis Stephen. Additionally, one can find the sarcophagus of Princess Sisi, placed beside the sarcophagus of her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph, with their son Rudolf's sarcophagus on the other side.
