Introduction

The Putou, Yaolin, and Dayou old streets in Lukang are a great starting point for a leisurely walk. These streets, paved with red bricks, are lined with well-preserved old shops and residences, and were once the main roads of the Lukang port area. In the past, Lukang was mainly focused on trade, and due to its unique geographical location, the area near the port became an important base for shipping and merchants. Most of the buildings on both sides were shipping companies, where negotiations for various cargo and shipping schedules were held inside, while carts were constantly passing by on the street, making you feel like you were on an old street in Quanzhou on the mainland. Despite the narrow facade of these buildings, they are actually very deep, generally ten times wider than the front. Lukang Old Street was listed as a monument preservation area in 1986 and is one of Taiwan's first old streets to be designated as such. A famous scenic spot, "Half-Cut Well," is located on Yaolin Street. Most of the buildings on the old streets are traditional Minnan-style buildings with red brick floors and anti-evil herbs hanging at the door, giving them a rustic charm. In addition, Lukang is one of the places in Taiwan with the highest density of Spring Festival couplets. From these couplets, you can see the industry that the family is engaged in, the host's pattern, and accomplishment. The calligraphy and content of the Spring Festival couplets from all walks of life in Lukang can be seen everywhere. The beauty of the calligraphy and the sophistication of the content uniquely depict every aspect of people's spirit, allowing you to deeply appreciate the meaning behind it.
