Introduction

Wushantou Reservoir, located in Guantian District, Tainan, is nicknamed Coral Pond because of its greenish-blue hue resembling coral reefs. It not only provides water source for farmland in the Jiannan region but also serves as a public water supply and industrial water allocation base for the greater Tainan area. Additionally, it is a beautiful scenic area featuring both forest and static beauty. Water from nearly 30 streams and tributaries converge into the reservoir, some of which were already small reservoirs during the Dutch colonial era. In the 1920s, the Jiannan Canal was built, which was one of the largest hydraulic engineering projects in Taiwan at the time, making the reservoir's surface area even one-third larger than that of Sun Moon Lake. There are over 100 small islands distributed throughout the reservoir, enhancing its beauty with its reflection of the surrounding mountains. During the Japanese colonial era, Coral Pond was once one of Taiwan's largest reservoirs. The designer, Mr. Yata Yoichi, died in the Second World War, and his wife chose to commit suicide at the water outlet. A memorial bronze statue was erected in his honor at the reservoir. The unique structure of Wushantou Reservoir makes Coral Fountain one of Tainan's Eight Scenes. The water outlet forms an artificial waterfall due to the reservoir's dam, and during sunset, countless water droplets dance along with the setting sun, creating a stunning sight. To the left of the Coral Fountain are the Wushantou Youth Hostel and a large Boy Scouts camping area. The Zhongzheng Park by the reservoir is built on a small hill, from which visitors can enjoy the view of the lake, mountains, and yachts sailing on the reservoir. There is also a nearby temple called Chishan Longhu Rock that houses statues of Guanyin Bodhisattva and Shakyamuni Buddha, with continuous incense burning.
