Introduction

The Hualien Sugar Factory is located in Guangfu Township. Originally named "Matian," meaning "breadfruit" in the Amis language, the area was abundant in breadfruit trees, which served as a staple food for the indigenous people. The factory, initially known as "Hua Lian Port Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Yanshui Port Sugar Factory," was established in 1921. In 1937, the administrative area was renamed "Shang Dawo" to promote the revitalization of the sugar industry. After Taiwan's recovery in 1945, the place reverted back to its original name, "Tai'an." In 1957, the factory was renamed "Taiwan Sugar Corporation Hualien Sugar Factory" and officially became the Guangfu Sugar Factory. Over the years, the factory has undergone expansions and updates, significantly improving sugar production and quality. Additionally, it has contributed to the unique landscape of the Hualien area, providing sugar cane as raw material from Xincheng Township in the north to Fuli Township in the south. The variety of flavors of ice pops and ice cream produced by the confectionery segment are widely popular. Whether for out-of-town visitors or local residents, a visit to the sugar factory for ice cream has become an unforgettable pleasure.
