Introduction

The Tropic of Cancer is the boundary between the temperate zone and the tropics in the Northern Hemisphere. It passes through 16 countries, including Taiwan, where there are three Tropic of Cancer monuments located in Shuishang in Chiayi, Wuhe in Hualien, and Jingpu in Hualien. On the summer solstice, which falls on June 21st or 22nd each year, the sun shines directly overhead at noon, and visitors can observe the phenomenon of the sun rising and setting east-west through the narrow slit on the monument. It is worth mentioning that the monument is designed with a narrow slit through which sunlight shines precisely at noon on the summer solstice, creating the magical sight of having no shadow next to the monument.
