Introduction

The Confucius Temple is located in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung City, on the north bank of Lianchi Lake outside the north gate of Zuoying Old Town. The temple is grand in scale and majestic in architectural style. It was first built as a holy temple in the 23rd year of Kangxi (1684) by County Magistrate Yang Fangsheng. It underwent repairs during the reigns of Qianlong and Guangxu due to damage caused by wind and rain, eventually forming its complete scale. The Dacheng Hall is in the middle, with the East and West Wing Halls on the sides, the Dacheng Gate as the front entrance, and the Chongsheng Shrine at the back. The total circumference of the academy is over 122 zhang, making it comprehensive and grand in scale. Completed in the 65th year of the Republic of China, it is backed by mountains and faces water, showcasing its grandeur. The architectural style is inspired by the shape of the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong, and the scale of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City. It is solemn and magnificent, fully expressing reverence for the sage Confucius. Outside the Confucius Temple, there is a square and an arched bridge, with bronze relief walls depicting the deeds of Confucius. Every year on September 28th, Teacher's Day, the Confucius Temple holds a grand ceremony to worship Confucius. When looking east from the temple, one can see a peculiarly shaped mountain with its left side resembling a mountain that has been sliced by a knife, known as Banping Mountain.
