On July 1st, 1978, Shoushan Zoo opened in Xizi Bay and was initially named "Xizi Bay Zoo". It was originally managed by the Xizi Bay Scenic Area and later moved to the Shoushan Scenic Area on the eastern foothills of Shoushan due to the reopening of Zhongshan University. It took five years to plan and build, and was completed in May 1986. It officially opened on June 15th of the same year. In addition to raising many animals, Shoushan Zoo also has a water-play area where visitors can enjoy playing in the water during the hot summer months.
