Introduction
This building was built before 1894 (in the 20th year of the Guangxu Emperor in the Qing dynasty) and was originally owned by Mrs. D. Carolina Cunha. In 1918, Sir Ho Tung, a wealthy Hong Kong businessman, purchased the building and used it as a summer retreat in Macau to escape the heat. Upon his death, according to his will, his descendants donated the building to the Macau government to be used as a public library. The library officially opened to the public in 1958.
