Introduction

Sukhothai Historical Park is a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Thailand's most famous world heritage sites. Over the centuries, the city lay abandoned in the lush jungle. Today, the Thai Fine Arts Department and UNESCO have collaborated to restore it as a park, with lawns and ponds creating a grand park landscape. The park is divided into the central area and four regions: East, West, South, and North. The central area is surrounded by city walls and there are over 90 ruins outside the walls. The main relics in the park include 40 temple buildings and four city gates, with four large ponds inside the walls. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins, admire the lotus flowers, and rent bicycles to tour outside the city walls. On the north side outside the ancient city walls, there is an information center built in the style of northern Thai architecture, where visitors can learn about the entire historical park through models and brochures. The distinctive feature of temple architecture in Sukhothai Historical Park is its classic lotus-shaped stupas. Despite its age, it has been preserved more intact compared to other sites. This is because the pillars of the Sukhothai temples were built of bricks, with only the roofs made of wood, whereas buildings from the later Ayutthaya period suffered damage.
