Introduction

A beautiful temple that was built 582 years ago, it has undergone several name changes and embodies a unique and diverse culture, adding a warm and special atmosphere to Chiang Mai. It is not purely Lanna architecture but rather a fusion of architectural styles and characteristics from China, Europe, and central Thailand, creating a unique blend that makes it a worthwhile place to visit. The temple was initially named Wat Sa Gate, named after a ceremonial site for the Chiang Mai royal family where they would come to wash their hair on the first day of the Songkran Festival (Lanna New Year). It was later renamed due to sharing the same name with another temple in the south, and is now known as Wat Ket Karam or "Wat Gate" (according to foreign spelling conventions), also housing the Wat Gate Museum.
