Introduction

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is one of the most important and iconic temples in Thailand. It was commissioned by King Rama I and the main hall features murals painted by the temple's monk, Varnawatwichit, between 1922 and 1923. The temple is divided into two large areas, separated by a walkway. There are small bells and baskets of daily necessities offered to the monks, and the grassy areas are adorned with animal statues. The exterior walls of the temple's wooden scripture hall are decorated with exquisite reliefs, and the interior murals depict a variety of subjects. The entrance is marked by a golden archway with a golden statue of a monk, and it takes a short walk to reach the temple buildings. Behind the temple, there is a path that leads to the riverbank, where you can find stalls selling flowers, bread, popcorn, and more. Many people can also be seen feeding birds, turtles, and fish in the river. From the opposite side of the river, you can catch a glimpse of the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and tall buildings with Islamic architectural influences. Ferry boats cross the river regularly, with people using nets to collect debris from the water.
