Introduction
Karuizawa is located in the eastern part of Nagano Prefecture in Japan and is known for its pleasant mountain villages and summer resorts. It attracts many tourists every year. In ancient times, Karuizawa was a lodging station on the Nakasendo highway, but it gradually became quiet as times changed. It was not until 1888, when Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw visited and marveled at the scenery resembling his hometown Toronto, that he built a villa here and actively promoted Karuizawa as a summer resort, marking the beginning of its revival. Since then, many famous people have vacationed and relaxed here, including the renowned musician John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono from The Beatles and the current Emperor of Japan, Emperor Akihito, and Empress Michiko, who had a historical encounter in Karuizawa.
