Introduction

Shirakawa-go is located at the foot of Mount Hakusan in Gifu Prefecture, surrounded by mountains, vast rice fields, and intersecting rivers. In December 1995, during the 19th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO held in Berlin, Germany, it was decided to list "Shirakawa-go and Gokayama's Gassho-style Villages" in the World Heritage List. This is the sixth place in Japan to be recognized as a World Heritage Site and is an acknowledgment of Japan's long-standing efforts to protect its natural and cultural heritage. This peaceful mountain village attracts a large number of visitors every year. The houses in Shirakawa-go have a unique architectural design that was created to cope with the abundant winter snowfall in this region of Japan. This structure not only reduces the impact of wind, but also regulates sunlight to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the year. These houses are still inhabited by hundreds of villagers in Shirakawa-go.
