Introduction

The Wada House, established during the late Edo period, is the only Important Cultural Property in Shirakawa-go. With a long family history dating back to 1573 in the Warring States period, each generation of the Wada family has been named "Yaemon" and made their fortune through gunpowder trade in the Edo period. Originally, this large house was not a symbol of wealth, but rather built because there was not enough land in the village for the family to split off. As a result, the Wada House became an Important Cultural Property when the head of the household expanded the house to accommodate the second and third sons and their families. Today, the Wada House not only retains its traditional architectural style but also serves as a residence for residents. In addition to being an exhibition space, this historic building is still a cultural heritage in Shirakawa-go.
