Introduction

The Jinya was the administrative center during the Edo period, where county governors and deputy governors governed. It consisted of the official residence and warehouses of the authorities. In 1777, during the An'ei era, the Hida deputy governor was promoted to become the Hida county governor, gaining fame as one of the three prominent county governors in Japan. During the late years of the shogunate, there were over 60 county governors and deputy governors across the country, and the Hida Jinya is the only remaining site that preserves the architecture from that time. It was designated as a National Treasure in 1929, making it the sole remaining heritage of its kind in Japan.
