Introduction

Blue Pond is located at the foot of Mount Tokachi in Shirogane Onsen, Hokkaido, about 2.5 kilometers away. It is a mysterious pond with a blue-green surface and standing dead trees around it. In fact, the Blue Pond is not a natural formation. It was created by the Hokkaido Development Bureau through the construction of diversion channels and dams, where filtered surface runoff accumulates and forms a pond. The water contains white particles such as aluminum hydroxide, which interact with sunlight, giving the Blue Pond its unique blue reflection. The photographs of Blue Pond taken by National Geographic photographer Kent Shiraishi were acquired by Apple Inc. and became one of the default desktop wallpapers for their macOS and iOS 7 operating systems, attracting worldwide attention.
