Introduction

Meigetsu-in is a temple belonging to the Rinzai sect of the Kencho-ji school, named "Ziyanghua Temple" because of the large amount of purple lavender planted in the complex. The temple was a Zen temple in the Muromachi period and was built by the eighth shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, Hojo Tokimune. However, during the Meiji era's Buddhist Purge Movement, the Zenkei Palace was destroyed and only Meigetsu-in remains today. In addition to lavender, various flowers such as camellias, plum blossoms, magnolias, and azaleas are planted in the courtyard, and even iris flowers are grown in the abbots' courtyard, making Meigetsu-in a great place to enjoy flowers all year round.
