Introduction

The name of Enkakuji Temple is derived from the Mahayana sutra "Enkaku Sutra" from the late 13th century. When the temple was founded, Zen master Wuxue Zuyuan from southern Song Dynasty in China was appointed as the founding patriarch. Hojo Tokimune, the ruling power at that time, was also the initiator. His father, Hojo Tokiyori, was also a devout Buddhist, and both father and son made great contributions to the development of Buddhism in Kamakura. It is worth mentioning that D.T. Suzuki studied Zen here in the 20th century, and he successfully brought Zen to the West.

From March to November, operating hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, and from December to February of the following year, operating hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm.
