Introduction
Narikala Fortress is one of the most famous landmarks in Tbilisi. Its history can be traced back to the 4th century when it was built along with the founding of the city. At that time, it was called "Shuris-tsikhe," meaning "abhorrent fortress." In the 7th century, the fortress was expanded by the Arab emirate, and in the 12th century, King David completed its expansion. More renovations were carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries. However, a major earthquake in 1827 caused significant damage to the fortress, resulting in the demolition of part of the building.
The peak of the fortress provides a spectacular view of the entire city. Inside the fortress, there is a building called the Church of St. Nicholas, which was built in the 12th century. The church's murals depict biblical and Georgian historical scenes, making it culturally significant.
Today, Narikala has become one of the most popular attractions in Tbilisi, attracting a large number of tourists every year. It is best to visit in the early morning when there are fewer visitors and you can enjoy the sunrise. Female visitors who wish to enter the church must wear a headscarf or scarf that covers their head. If you forget to bring one, free scarves are available at the entrance.
