Introduction

At each hour mark, a large number of tourists spontaneously gather near the St. Mary's Basilica tower, waiting for the sound of "Hejnał" to ring out. This tradition is in remembrance of the brave trumpeter who, in the 13th century, was shot in the throat with an arrow as the Mongols invaded the city, causing the trumpet sound to abruptly halt. Today, people gather here to applaud the trumpeter and to remember that brave soul.
