Introduction
The Pilgrimage Church of St. Wolfgang originates from a legend. It is said that in the year 976, Bishop Wolfgang of Regensburg came to the hermitage of Falkenstein and was inspired to build a church. He swore to build the church with an axe and to retrieve the axe within three days. When he found the axe by the lakeside next to a rocky hill, he decided to build the church there. The church contains two rooms, one is the monastery's church with Pacher's altar and parish, the other is the pilgrimage church with Schwanthaler's altar, separated by a stone. The entire interior is in Baroque style with wall paintings from 1625 perfectly presented. In 1674, the church was dismantled and a new area was built on the original site.
