Teatro Amazonas, A Century of Opulent Amazonian Performances

Avenida Eduardo Ribeiro, Centro, Manaus

Introduction

The Amazon Theatre is a precious architectural heritage built during the rubber boom era. Planning for the building began in 1881 with the aim of making Manaus the highest temple of Brazilian cultural art. The theatre uses materials from around the world, including ceilings from Alsace, furniture and textiles from Paris, marble steps, columns, and sculptures from Italy, and steel products from England. After 17 years of construction and various difficulties, the theatre was finally completed. On January 7, 1897, the Amazon Theatre welcomed its first performance, the four-act opera "Gioconda" by Italian composer Ponchielli. Today, the Amazon Theatre has 701 comfortable velvet seats and regularly hosts various productions. Visitors can check for performance information on the official website www.cultura.am.gov.br. Additionally, visitors can choose English or Portuguese as their tour language and take a tour led by a guide to visit this beautiful theatre.
