Introduction

The Black Tower (also known as the Danta) is located in the center of Vientiane and is a black pagoda. It may seem unremarkable, but it holds great importance in the hearts of the locals and is one of the oldest landmarks in Vientiane. It was built in the 14th century and legend has it that there is a cave below it, containing a giant dragon with seven heads. During the war in 1828, this dragon protected the people of Vientiane from harm and is revered as a savior and guardian by the Laotian people, known as "Naga." The image of Naga can be seen on many Buddha statues in the temple. Originally, the Black Tower was covered in gold leaf, but it was stolen by the invading Siamese. Now, the surface of the Black Tower has weathered, leaving it black with the worn marks of history.
