Wat Mai, A Sanctuary of Golden Elegance and Serenity
4.1
Introduction
Wat Mai is one of the most famous temples in Luang Prabang, and also one of the largest and most ornate. It was built in the 18th century and is located near the Royal Palace Museum. Inside the temple is a precious green gemstone Buddha image. The architecture of the temple is very unique, with the main hall following the typical Luang Prabang style, but the usually adjacent colonnades being in an unusual position against the mountain wall. Although Wat Mai suffered damage from invaders in the past, most of the buildings outside the main hall have been renovated. The front porch of the temple features beautifully decorated columns and luxurious gilded reliefs, depicting the stories of the Buddha and the myths of the Laotian rain god, as well as scenes from the Ramayana and rural life. During important festivals, the Luang Prabang Buddha image is brought from the Royal Palace Museum to Wat Mai for worshippers to visit. Opening hours 8:00 to 17:00
