Introduction

The small temple of Thommanon is one of the famous attractions in Angkor Wat, Cambodia. Built in the 12th century, it is dedicated to the Hindu gods Shiva and Vishnu. Located about 70 meters north of Victory Gate outside the Angkor Thom Royal City, Thommanon temple has the same architectural style and symmetrical position as the Chau Say Tevoda temple. Though small in size, it shares a similar structure with the main Angkor temples and can be considered a miniature version. The surrounding walls of the temple have disappeared, but the intricate carvings on the main structure are still well-preserved, showcasing the influence of the Banteay Srei temple and featuring the charming Apsara dancers. The elegant carvings of the celestial nymphs on the red sandstone outer walls are particularly famous. The main temple is cross-shaped, with a library on the side and beautifully decorated gates on the surrounding walls. Like the Queen's Palace, Thommanon temple also features the voluptuous devata sculptures, adorned with numerous ornaments, including floral crowns with sugar palm flowers, revealing full breasts, slim waists, long skirts, holding lotus flowers in their hands, and wearing intricate earrings hanging down their elongated ears. Thanks to the extensive restoration work carried out by the EFEO in the 1960s, Thommanon temple is in much better condition compared to the more dilapidated Chau Say Tevoda temple.
