Introduction

Kbal Spean is one of the mysterious temples in the Angkor complex. It is located about 10 kilometers northeast of the Queen's Palace, 80 kilometers from Siem Reap, and the journey takes about 2 hours by car. The temple is completely surrounded by wilderness, making it difficult to determine its exact location. Although it is similar in scale and architectural style to the Angkor temples, it is still enveloped by the jungle, making it difficult to fully admire. The temple used to be surrounded by a 1.2-kilometer long and 900-meter wide moat, which is now dried up. Exploring Kbal Spean allows you to experience the mysterious atmosphere of the jungle. The central tower has completely collapsed, and there are several amazing stone carvings hidden among the rubble and vegetation. In addition, there is a well-preserved library to the northeast. However, due to poor protection, many sculptures have been stolen. These features make Kbal Spean unique and worth spending time to thoroughly explore. Today, there is a wooden walkway leading to the Chinese area within the temple complex, with an entrance fee of $5. It is advisable to visit Kbal Spean along with the Queen's Palace, Koh Ker, and Phnom Kulen. Although the roads are bumpy, you can hire local children as guides, as they are very knowledgeable. Prepare some candies and pens, which can be exchanged for their helpful assistance. Unlike children at other tourist spots in Siem Reap, the children here do not sell anything and appear more friendly and welcoming.
