Introduction
Banteay Srei is one of the most mysterious temples in the Angkor Wat complex, located about 10 kilometers northeast of the Royal Palace and 80 kilometers from Siem Reap, requiring a 2-hour drive. The temple is completely engulfed by the wilderness, making it difficult to determine one's whereabouts. Despite its similar scale and architectural style to Angkor Wat, it is still enveloped by the jungle, making it difficult to see the full extent. The temple used to be surrounded by a 1.2-kilometer long and 900-meter wide moat, which has now dried up.
Exploring Banteay Srei allows you to experience the mystical atmosphere of the jungle. The central tower has completely collapsed, with several astonishing stone carvings hidden among the rubble and vegetation. Additionally, there is a well-preserved library to the northeast. However, due to inadequate protection, many sculptures have been stolen. These unique features make Banteay Srei stand out and worth the time to thoroughly explore.
These days, there is a wooden walkway leading to the Chinese area within the temple complex, with a ticket price of $5. It is located about 50 kilometers from Siem Reap and is best combined with visits to the Royal Palace, Koh Ker, and Phnom Kulen. Although the road may be rugged, you can hire local children as guides, as they are very knowledgeable. Prepare some candies and pens, which can be exchanged for their cheerful assistance. Additionally, unlike children in other tourist attractions in Siem Reap, these children do not sell anything and are particularly friendly and amicable.
