Introduction

There is a monument at the eastern end of Mactan Island, which marks the site where Magellan and his fleet landed in Cebu in 1521. Local chieftain Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan, and despite attempts to find his body in exchange for jewels and spices, it was never found. In 1866, a monument was built on the site, which also serves as the burial place of Magellan.
