Introduction
Santiago Fortress, originally a wooden fort, was rebuilt into a stone fortress by the Spanish governor in 1590 and used for imprisoning and executing important political prisoners. Legend has it that the fortress was named Santiago Castle after the patron saint of Portugal, as it was built using meteorites from the Java Sea to defend against local forces. Today, the fortress still retains its ancient cannons, while the surrounding land has been transformed into a spacious golf course. The former small prison cells, where countless Filipino patriots were once held, have been converted into the Rizal Shrine for visitors to admire and explore. Address Santa Clara Street (Intramuros)
