Introduction

During the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, salt merchant Lu Shaoxu invested 70,000 taels of silver to build this south-facing residential building. The original structure consisted of nine houses, spacious and magnificent, and featured a lot of nanmu wood decoration. This is the largest surviving salt merchant residence in Yangzhou. Unfortunately, in 1981, a fire destroyed the main hall, nanmu hall, second hall, and female hall of the four houses. Nevertheless, the gatehouse, residential building, inner palace, Garden of Master of Nets, book tower, pavilions and other buildings have been well preserved.
