Introduction

The Jiliu Huang Gong Temple, located at No. 2 Tiexiang in Yi'an Road, was built in the 13th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty. It is a two-courtyard house with a width of 15.4 meters and a depth of 25.7 meters. The gatehouse is decorated with exquisite stone carvings and the gate has the words "Jiliu Huang Gong Temple" inscribed on it, while the back is engraved with "Filial Piety and Deep Thoughts". The layout of four halls facing each other is highlighted by the courtyard between the first entrance and the rear hall, the corridors on both sides, and the embrace pavilion of the rear hall. The typical structure of the trough roof framework, called "three-five wood guava and eighteen blocks", reflects the architectural style of Jiliu Huang Gong Temple. This building is a hall of Chaozhou woodcarving art, using multiple techniques such as round carving, sunk carving, relief carving, and hollowing out to break through the limitations of space and time. Especially the decoration of auspicious animals such as dragons, phoenixes, and lions, as well as the depiction of legends and folk stories such as the bronze sparrow platform, Zhang Yu boiling the sea, and water overflowing golden mountain, add luster to Jiliu Huang Gong Temple. The expression technique of Hanjiang LiJing local scenery is also unique, vividly showing complex content on multiple levels. The combination of three expression techniques: black lacquer with gold decoration, five-colors with gold decoration, and natural-colored carving, makes the entire building distinct with clear layers. Therefore, Jiliu Huang Gong Temple is hailed as the "number one woodcarving treasure of Chaozhou" and is now a key national cultural heritage protection unit.
