Introduction

It is said that Kumtag Desert is about 90 kilometers away from the Turpan city, and is one of the closest deserts to a city in the world. After thousands of years of erosion, the sand here does not come in or go out, making it an exceptionally rare natural wonder. Kumtag Desert is a flowing desert with magnificent landscapes such as sand pits and sand mountains. In Uyghur language, its name means "sand mountain." This desert began in the Han Dynasty and is like a museum that concentrates typical scenery from all major deserts in the world. It was also the last sacred place before the disappearance of the ancient Loulan Kingdom.
