Introduction
Guoqing Temple, located at the foot of Huading Mountain, is one of the famous ancient temples in China. Respected by both Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, it is the formal ancestral temple of Tiantai Sect. Together with Qizhou Lingyan Temple, Runzhou Qixia Temple, and Jingzhou Yuquan Temple, they are called the "Four Wonders" of the world. Guoqing Temple was first built in the 18th year of Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty, based on the hand-drawn style of Tiantai Sect's founder Zhiyi. After establishing the sect, Zhiyi wanted to build a temple as the formal ancestral temple, but the lack of funds prevented construction. It wasn't until Prince Jin Yang Guang saw Zhiyi's will and was greatly moved that Sima Wanghong was appointed to supervise the building of Guoqing Temple. The temple was initially built on the slope of Bagui Peak about 100 meters behind the current main hall. During the Tang Dynasty, the temple was destroyed by fire but was later rebuilt. In the fifth year of the Tang Dynasty, Liu Gongquan wrote the six words "Dazhong Guoqing Temple" on the stone wall behind the temple, which are still clearly visible today.
