Introduction

This is the second oldest botanical garden in Japan, planned by the botanist Kinji Miyabe, a graduate of the second class of Sapporo Agricultural College, in 1883. He started collecting plants in Hokkaido in June 1884, and some of the trees he collected at that time are still preserved. The Japanese larch was among the trees Miyabe brought back from his trip to the Kuril Islands. As the oldest museum building of Japan's pioneer agency, this is a fascinating attraction. The Northern Peoples Gallery exhibits materials related to the Ainu people and also shows a valuable silent movie of the 1935 "Bear Festival," which records the sacred ritual.
