Introduction

Kakunodate is a peaceful small town in eastern Akita Prefecture, Japan, surrounded by castle walls and three hills. The 2-kilometer long cherry blossom trees on both sides of the Hinokinai River to the southwest of the castle are designated as a national scenic spot. The Kakunodate Castle Town, with a history of 400 years and a typical layout, still retains many samurai residences from the feudal era. The most famous of them are the Ishiguro, Aoyagi, and Nishigomi houses.
