Introduction

The San Angelo Fortress is located in the town of Vitoriosa on the eastern side of the Grand Harbour, built in the Middle Ages. Originally named the Castle of Maris, it was rebuilt as a pentagon-shaped fortress by the Order of St. John between 1530 and 1690 and renamed the San Angelo Fortress. The fortress is grand in scope and suffered extensive damage during World War II. In 1998, the San Angelo Fortress was listed as an experimental World Heritage site by UNESCO.
