Introduction

In 1887, the city of Rabat on the island of Gozo was renamed Victoria in honor of Queen Victoria's coronation. The Citadel castle is the iconic building of the city, dating back to the late Middle Ages. After it was occupied by the Knights of St. John in 1565, it was mainly used as a base and shelter to defend against outside attacks. Victoria currently has 6,000 residents and retains its quaint style, as if it were an old man who has experienced centuries of vicissitudes. Additionally, the city is the center of Gozo, as well as the transportation hub, government seat, and cultural activity center of the entire island.
