Introduction

The shrine on Chikubushima Island in Lake Biwa is the largest lake shrine in Japan, enshrining either Shirahige Daishin or Hira no Myojin, believed to have been built in the 25th year of Emperor Taruhito's 11th generation. The shrine is characterized by a torii gate in the water, hence its nickname "Omi no Enoshima". The shrine has been recognized as a National Important Cultural Property, a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and a designated cultural property by Takashima City. The shrine holds two regular festivals every year, the Tokiwa-sai Festival on May 3 and the Autumn Festival on September 5th to 6th.
