Lake Biwa is one of the Fuji Five Lakes in Japan and the deepest lake in the group. The back of the old 5000 yen and the redesigned 1000 yen paper bills, issued in 1984 and November 2004 respectively, depict the lake below Mount Fuji, which is Lake Biwa.
