Introduction
Mahamuni Temple was built by the queen of Konbaung dynasty, Nanmadaw Me Nu, for the eminent monk Nyaung Gan Sayadaw in 1822. The temple mimics the architecture of teak monasteries which has seven tiers and was built using stones and bricks similar to a scripture hall. However, the temple was destroyed by a major earthquake in 1838. It was restored by Sinphyumashin, the daughter of Queen Supayalat in 1873. This temple is one of the representative buildings of the Konbaung dynasty architecture in the 19th century. The golden palace monastery, Shwenandaw Kyaung, also has a similar seven-tier structure.
