Introduction

Bogu Dagin Pagoda is the most famous temple in Bagan and a symbol of the city. Over the past 600 years, the pagoda has been through numerous earthquakes, even being severely damaged in a major earthquake in 1930. However, devout Buddhists in Bagan have continuously repaired it, and today the pagoda stands at 114 meters tall with a gilded surface. It is very similar to the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, but is actually taller. Especially at night when illuminated, it can be clearly seen even from a distance of over ten kilometers away from the city. There are also 121 small pagodas and places of worship for local folk spirits (Nats) around the pagoda, which are important symbols of the local people's beliefs.
