Introduction

Located 35 kilometers south of Mandalay City, the Inwa Ancient City served as the capital city for four centuries. The city was surrounded by water, completely separated from the outside world. To the north was the Irrawaddy River with the Shwekyin river on its bank. To the east was a tributary of the Myitnge River, while to the south and west were canals. These water systems gave the city a layout resembling a crouching lion. Interestingly, this ancient city had some connection to Chinese history. After the fall of Ming Dynasty, Emperor Chongzhen committed suicide and Emperor Yongli proclaimed himself emperor in Guangdong. He and his followers, including some priests and common people, fled to Mandalay in 1661, but they were captured by the Burmese Dynasty and imprisoned in Inwa. Later, they were sent back to Yunnan. The ancient city has been through the 1838 earthquake and World War II. Nowadays, the remaining walls, palaces and pagodas are scattered randomly among the trees and fields, carrying the weight of a long history.

Transportation
The rental fee from the city to the pier on the opposite side of Yinwagucheng is about 8000K, then take a boat (1400K/person) to the other side of the river. The only means of transportation after landing is to rent a horse carriage (5000K/person). The carriage driver is very familiar with the order of the scenic spots. If there are other places to stop and watch along the way, the price needs to be negotiated. The whole Yinwagucheng's scenic spots are very scattered, with a large range, and the roads are not good, so it is not recommended to walk.
