Introduction

The Htilominlo Temple is located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River and is one of the oldest temples in Bagan. It is the only building constructed with stone and is one of the four great stupas of Myanmar, along with the Shwezigon Pagoda, the Ananda Temple, and the Shwesandaw Pagoda. The construction of the Htilominlo Temple was during the reigns of two kings, Anawrahta (1044-1077) and Kyansittha (1084-1113), and it is considered the founding stupa of the Bagan dynasty and one of the earliest examples of Burmese architecture. Climbing the roofed corridors, which are adorned with the names and donation amounts of benefactors, visitors can reach the top platform where a miniature, glittering Shwedagon Pagoda sits. Surrounding the temple are 53 statues of lions, ogres, and frogs. Inside the temple is a small copper Buddha statue, and the reliquaries and Buddha images brought from India are venerated by devotees. At night, the temple is lit up, providing visitors with a breathtaking view.
