Introduction

The building is located southwest of Ananda Temple, less than 800 meters away, and was built by King Alaungsithu in the 12th century. It is one of the mid-period buildings in ancient Bagan, one of the tallest buildings, and one of the earliest buildings with a nested structure. Together with Ananda Temple, it forms the landscape of "Bagan Twin Towers". The tower is divided into five levels, the first two of which are living quarters for monks, the third is a place for meditation, the fourth is a library, and the highest fifth level is where the Buddha is enshrined. As the second tallest pagoda in Bagan, there is also a huge brick Buddha statue inside the tower, and the pagoda walls are inscribed with Pali-language hymns in stone. This used to be the highest point to watch the sunrise and sunset, but now visitors can only admire the building from the first level to protect it. They are no longer allowed to go higher up.
