Introduction

Shipaotai Park is a valuable memorial park, with Qilu Battery as its main attraction. Qilu Battery was built in the 13th year of the Qing Dynasty's Tongzhi period, taking five years and a huge investment. The battery is a circular castle built with shell lime, boiled glutinous rice, and red sugar syrup mixed with sand, and is located at the southeast corner of the old Shantou, facing the battery on Mount Su'an, controlling the entrance and exit of Shantou Bay, and is therefore a very important geographical location, as well as the main coastal defense architecture in the eastern part of Guangdong Province during the Qing Dynasty. In the mid-19th century, the Opium War broke out, and Shantou became one of the treaty ports, requiring strengthened coastal defense. Therefore, Fang Yaoshun, the Chief General stationed in Chaozhou, submitted a memorial to the Qing court to build the Qilu Battery. The battery used piece lime, boiled glutinous rice, and red sugar syrup mixed with sand, and the gates and gun lanes were built with granite blocks, hence its name "Shipaotai". The interior of the battery has 18 cannon locations and several gun holes, as well as a clever and practical 27-level corrugated stone staircase designed to facilitate the movement of artillery. A park has been built around the battery, and it has been included in the overall planning of Shantou City's construction, becoming a good place for citizens to relax. Shipaotai Park has also been designated as a provincial key cultural relic protection unit by the Guangdong Provincial Government, and is a very important patriotic education base.
